So you made it to wheresmikey.com. I wish I knew where to begin, I have a million things I want to say, but I will keep this introduction short. My name is Michael Lythcott, and I am a 34 year old web designer and world traveler. I currently live in New York, NY (Brooklyn), but I spend roughly 5-7 months of the year abroad. Though I have been traveling since I was 17, my experience out of my own land started 5 years ago when I did my first trip outside North America, doing a whirlwind 7 days in London, Paris, and Barcelona. And I haven’t looked back since!
Though international travel is a more recent passion, I am no stranger to the road. I began traveling the USA and Canada when I was 17, following around some of my favorite bands (I photographed bands for 7 years). When I was 21, I drove my motorcycle from Atlanta, Georgia, USA to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and back. The trip was around 6500 miles in total. I realized then how much I loved seeing new places, making friends, trying new food, etc. And this was in 2001, before social media or Facebook, before you could instantly share your experience with anyone, anwywhere. Even cell phones were still sorta new back then. Yet I still felt a pull for the road and a desire to share my stories. Fast forward to the present and I’ve made, literally, thousands of friends and have countless stories from this very same road. So its time to tell my story and help others make their own stories!
This site has been in the works for a few years now, I’ve been promising friends I would do more to document my travels than just having a busy Facebook and Instagram page. So after many months of design and perfecting my ideas, I bring you wheresmikey.com! My goal is to not only tell you my stories, both past and present, but to give my advice about how to travel to amazing places cheaply, how to make friends and communicate, what to eat and how to experience new cultures, and how to make memories and relationships that will last a lifetime.
Traveling to a new and foreign place is fun, but challenging and can be overwhelming for new travelers, even for a seasoned veteran like myself. I am here to tell you that it is not as scary or expensive as it sounds. I’ve seen 21 countries, and by April, that number will be 30. I’ve done it all without incurring debt and have a wealth of experience to share. So welcome to this site and feel free to contact me with any questions. Can’t wait to share my stories. GO!
